ABOUT COMMUNITY

We understand the importance of giving back

At CPL Retail Energy, we understand the importance of giving back. Community engagement is a core part of who we are as a company, and we support and participate in a number of programs that benefit the places where our employees and customer regions in which we operate, live and work.

CPL is supporting many worthy causes including the Driscoll Children's Hospital (in Corpus Christi), Communities in Schools and our long-standing commitment to the Neighbor-to-Neighbor program, which supplements existing energy-assistance programs for families experiencing financial emergencies.

From Harlington to McAllen, Victoria to Corpus Christi, we are involved and proud members of the community.

Neighbor-to-Neighbor Program

CPL Retail Energy understands the positive impact of a helping hand. In today's tough economic climate, many families are struggling to get by. That's why we've continued our long-standing support of the Neighbor-to-Neighbor program – which supplements existing energy-assistance programs for families experiencing financial emergencies.

CPL's $600,000 contribution is allocated to 32 community agencies throughout Texas. Each agency screens applicants and determines who will receive assistance. Recipients can receive support up to twice a year and can receive up to $300 in a given month. CPL customers can also help out families in need by contributing to the fund by checking a box on their monthly bill.

CPL Retail Energy expands customer care operations to Rio Grande Valley

CPL Retail Energy has contracted with Tele performance to leverage a call center facility in Edinburg, TX — at the heart of CPL's footprint — to meet some of the company's specialized, bilingual, customer-care needs for Texas customers. At a time when others are laying off employees, CPL is expanding their operations.

Read more about CPL Retail Energy expanding its Texas-based customer care operations by over 20 percent and bringing 90 new jobs to the Rio Grande Valley from CPL Retail Energy Vice President and General Manager, Jim Steffes, State Rep. Veronica Gonzales, State Rep. Aaron Pena, and COO of Tele performance Mexico, Felix Marinez.

Lighting in Brownsville's Cameron Park and Laguna Heights

A $20,000 donation by CPL Retail Energy has helped to make the streets of Cameron Park and Laguna Heights (communities adjacent to Brownsville, Texas) brighter and safer for all their citizens.

Street lighting is something most people take for granted; but for the residents of Cameron Park and Laguna Heights, the lack of street lighting makes everyday occurrences such as sending children off to school early in the morning or walking to their neighbor's house a scary prospect.

In June 2007, funding for the purchase and installation of street lighting was secured through the Office of Rural Community Affairs (ORCA), but the project stalled when funding could not be obtained for electricity costs. That's when CPL stepped in to help. In order to make the neighborhood safer, CPL Retail Energy committed to cover the cost of electricity needed for the street lights for these communities.

Our donation covers electricity costs for 120 street lights over the next two years (84 in Cameron Park and 36 in Laguna Heights), and further stresses our commitment to continue to be contributing members in the communities we serve.

Employee volunteerism

CPL Retail Energy encourages employees to volunteer in the communities where they live and work as part of the employee directly in the community program. Teams have volunteered hours to Habitat for Humanity and similar initiatives as part of team-building exercises, and corporate donations are made available to employees who volunteer with local non-profit organizations whose missions make a positive difference in the community.
